“Trump’s imperial golden age,” Christian Century
Beginning with President Trump’s rhetoric of an American golden age, this essay describes Roman imperial claims about Emperors Augustus and Nero initiating golden ages and how these periods of flourishing supposedly affected (in positive ways) nature. The essay then considers how Paul’s depiction of creation in Romans 8:19–22 differs significantly from imperial claims and how the letter as a whole promotes counter-imperial practices and perspectives.
